Episode 68: Alex Schwartz, Producer, Executive

October 10, 2017 by Julie Harris Oliver in Diversity, entertainment, Film & TV, hollywood, women, animation

Alex was Head of Production for Alpha Animation at the time of this recording.  Since then, she has begun producing an all animated Addams Family feature film for MGM. She is a Producer with an amazing list of credits.  Some of them include: Bridge to Terabithia, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Holes, Rushmore, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion…you get the idea. She is legit.

We talked about her unlikely journey to the top.  Moving to LA and back to NY and back to LA.  As you do. Even the worst job you can think of might lead to something real and something big. Take every opportunity.

Alex came up through development as a creative executive, after starting out as a reader at $30 a pop. She walks us through the incredibly collaborative process of animation.

And this - we need to hear the voices of women for our very survival.

Episode 60: Suzanne Lyons, Producer, Author, Teacher

August 29, 2017 by Julie Harris Oliver in Diversity, entertainment, Film & TV, hollywood, immigration, Independent Film, PGA, women

Suzanne is a film producer, author, speaker, teacher and inspiration. You may remember the Flash Forward Institute in the early 2000’s.  She started that. She is the Co-Founder of Snowfall Films. She wrote Independent Film Producing: The Craft of Low Budget Filmmaking.

From humble beginnings in Canada, where she was told she could be a teacher, a nurse or a secretary, she quickly realized she was as smart as the men running things and might just have a go at that. At 29 she was the first female VP at a TV Network.

She is all about accountability and going for it. In this business, the key differentiator is who has actually done the work?

“In what other industry on planet earth do people relinquish their power in running their own lives to someone else (i.e. agents and managers?)”

And this: we are living on earth to experience joy and expansion. No limits.
